Wolverines wallop Centauri

BHS stays undefeated in league play

The Bayfield High School baseball team swept Centauri in a doubleheader Saturday to stay undefeated in the 3A/2A Intermountain League and remain atop the league standings.

The Wolverines beat Centauri 13-3 in Game 1 and then 9-1 in Game 2 to improve to 16-4, 6-0. Centauri slipped to 10-9, 1-5.

In the first game, Bayfield got either a run or an RBI from almost every player in its starting lineup.

After Centauri scored three runs in the top of the first, Bayfield responded with two in the bottom of the first, one in the second, five in the third three in the fourth and one in both the fifth and sixth to enact the 10-run mercy rule.

Jackson Queen drove home four RBIs to lead BHS’ offense while Austin Twedt and Devin Avery each had two RBIs. Caden Wood scored three runs while Nic Twedt, Avery and Noah Chamblee all scored twice

Lance Mazur had an RBI and scored once. Isaac Ross hit a triple and scored once. Nic Twedt also had a triple in the win.

Queen threw all six innings, only giving up two hits and one earned run to get the win.

Centauri struck first again in Game 2, plating one run in the first. Bayfield, led by Ross on the mound, kept them from scoring any more. Ross only gave up one hit and four walks while striking out nine in seven innings to get a complete game victory.

The Wolverines tied the game at 1-1 in the second, took a 2-1 lead in the third and then exploded for four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull away.

Nic Twedt hit two more triples in the second game, bringing two runs in and scoring twice. Wood also hit a triple and had an RBI. Mazur and Austin Twedt both scored twice while Elias Coleman, Queen and Ross also scored for BHS.

Bayfield will try and wrap up the league title on Saturday when the Wolverines conclude their regular season at the No. 2 team in the league, Alamosa (8-6, 3-1).
