Wolverines welcome to my Hardy

Bayfield big man crashes the Pirates’ party

Preston Hardy must really like playing against Pagosa Springs.

He scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and made three blocks in the Bayfield High School boys basketball team’s 75-37 win over the Pirates on Friday night in Bayfield.

That was after putting up 37 points and 13 rebounds in the team’s first meeting, an 86-76 victory in four overtimes.

“It’s fun to play Pagosa (Springs),” said Hardy, son of Garth and Monna Hardy. “It’s just a good time.”

He wasn’t alone at the party, either.

Two other Wolverines scored in double figures: Taed Heydinger scored 15 points and Geoff Pope 10.

BHS (9-8, 3-3 Intermountain League) outscored Pagosa Springs (4-12, 0-6 IML) 23-4 in the third quarter after leading 29-21 at halftime.

All four of the Pirates’ points in the quarter came from the free throw line.

“It’s always interesting, we take a little while to warm up to what’s happening on the floor,” BHS head coach Randy Stephens said. “What we talked about was taking the opportunities that were there. Keep going to the well. If they don’t adjust, then we don’t adjust.”

The Pirates had a chance to cut their deficit to single digits near the end of the first half but turned the ball over trailing by five.

BHS answered with a 3 on the other end.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for BHS ahead of its home game against first-place Centauri (13-4, 5-1 IML) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
