Wolverines whack 4A Broncos, 43-0

Seemingly gripping the opposing Broncos' reins tighter than their new head coach Greg Jenks, Bayfield took charge in the second quarter of last Friday's season-opener and dominated 4A Kirtland, N.M., Central 43 to 0.

Senior running back Zane Phelps totaled three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) on the road, and freshman RB David Hawkins scored once as did junior Jesse Westbrook to put the final shine on the night's shutout, which was becoming unavoidable by halftime as BHS went into the locker room with a 29-zip advantage.

Senior quarterback Kelton McCoy threw for two TD's, with the other going to classmate Taed Heydinger.

Full statistics had not been reported by press time.

Idle during the extended Labor Day weekend's activities, the Wolverines (1-0, 0-0 Western Slope-South Division) will next see action on Sept. 11 when 5A Miyamura High School of Gallup visits Wolverine Country Stadium.

The Patriots won their 2015 premiere last Friday, 37-10 over non-district 5A Moriarty (N.M.) They play the first of three consecutive away games on their schedule tonight at Montezuma-Cortez.

Conference-mates with BHS, the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers dropped their opener last Friday in Aspen, 29-12, spoiling the debut of new boss Dave Wagner.
