It was a buzzer beater.
Ryan Phelps landed a trey in the final seconds of the game, sending Bayfield into overtime 45-45 Friday in the state 3A consolation semi-final against Jefferson Academy.
Then the Bayfield Wolverines, without 6'6" center Preston Hardy, won 55-51.
Without Hardy, Bayfield had to turn it up a notch.
At first, it didn't happen. Jefferson Academy lead the entire game through the third quarter. At the end of the third, it was 36-25. A lot of Wolverine fans had sighed and figured two games and we were out.
But Bayfield came alive in the fourth, with Trevor Gabbard, Zane Phelps, Dillon Hoselton, Conner Kennedy and Taed Heydinger stepping up to make more shots.
Ryan Phelps made the trey at the buzzer, and it was game on.
Zane Phelps made a hoop, followed by Heydinger, then Conner Kennedy sank two freethrows at the very end.
Bayfield now moves into the consolation final at 11:30 Saturday against Alamosa, who won the IML league. Good luck Wolverines!
In the Final Four, all teams are private academies. Of the three public schools in the tournament, Brush is out after losing to Alamosa Friday morning.
