Wolverines win third straight match

BHS volleyball surges into weekend tests

Senior K’Lee Stuffelbeam-Jolly downed eight kills, and a trio of teammates – seniors Kody Rey, Kaydence Hunter and Kenasea Byrd – recorded six apiece as Bayfield won their third straight match Tuesday by beating Montezuma-Cortez.

Improving to 6-8 overall, and 3-2 in the 3A Intermountain, the Wolverines swept the Panthers 25-20, 25-17, 25-12 to build momentum for two critical home contests this weekend.

First, Alamosa (9-5, 5-1) will invade BHS Gymnasium on Friday, seeking payback for a four-game home loss Sept. 24. Centauri will then come to town on Saturday. Trying to stop a six-match slide, M-CHS (4-8, 0-5) will next host CHS (9-6, 3-2) on Friday, then AHS – ranked No. 7 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 3A poll – on Saturday.

Against Montezuma-Cortez, sophomore Tanna Owens totaled 19 set assists, and senior Bailey Martinez, 14.

Defensively, Stuffelbeam-Jolly logged two solo and three assisted blocks, and junior Allia Connell was credited with three assisted blocks.

Senior libero Myrah Abdallah-Boehm came up with 17 digs, Hunter and Rey each registered eight, and senior Kori Jenkins seven as Bayfield – the rankings’ sixth-highest “Others Receiving Votes” team (four spots behind Centauri) – totaled a quite-impenetrable 55.

Boys soccer postponed

Bayfield boys soccer (6-2-1, 1-1-0 3A Southwest) was also scheduled to play at Montezuma-Cortez (1-6, 1-2) on Tuesday, but the meeting was pushed back to Oct. 20 because of lightning. The preceding JV match was stopped by the elements with the score at 1-1. Freshman Wyatt Larson netted a penalty kick for BHS’ goal.
