Wolverines wreck shop at Salida tourney

BHS baseball goes 3-0; Mazur hurls no-hitter

Out of town as Bayfield won just one of four games over spring break, junior Lance Mazur returned in a big way for the Wolverines at the Salida Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

With BHS bumped from the Class 3A top 10 into “Others Receiving Votes” and having mashed 2A Monte Vista 13-1 and 2A Meeker 12-1 on the Invitational’s first day, Mazur fired a complete-game no-hitter as Bayfield blanked Salida 15-0 in four innings on Day 2.

Receiving run support, Mazur walked just two batters and whiffed six as the restocked Wolverines improved to 9-4 (0-0 Intermountain).

Junior Noah Chamblee went 3-for-3 including a double and a homer, scored two runs and plated three to lead the onslaught. Junior Andy Monger was credited with a team-high four RBIs on 1-for-3 batting including a double. Senior Isaac Ross reportedly went 2-for-2 with a triple and a walk, scored three times and drove in three.

Finishing with a 2-1 tourney record, Salida dipped to 4-2 overall with the loss.

BHS’ win over former IMLers Monte Vista came after the Wolverines got the Pirates for eight fifth-inning runs, allowing junior Jackson Queen – also back from a break – to finish his start having allowed fewer than five hits while posting a 10:0 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Austin Twedt went 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs and three RBIs, and Queen helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Ross was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs. Chamblee went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run and an RBI.

Against Western Slope Leaguers Meeker, Bayfield jumped out to a 5-1 lead after an inning, and led the Cowboys 10-1 through three. Junior Caden Wood, who’d started twice the previous weekend in La Junta at the Hampton Inn Tiger Baseball Classic, earned the five-inning win after going the distance and fanning eight while walking one.

Chamblee (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Ross (2-3, 3 R, 4 RBI) each belted a home run, while Wood went 2-2 with a double plus a sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Twedt went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Mazur went 2-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Next, Bayfield will begin IML play April 16 at Pagosa Springs, with the doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. The Wolverines’ next home game will follow April 19 when 4A Durango comes to town for a 3 p.m. varsity single.
