A woman died Wednesday evening after jumping off the bridge over the Animas River on U.S. Highway 550/160 near the intersection of Colorado Highway 3, commonly referred to as the High Bridge.
Cmdr. Rita Warfield of the Durango Police Department said police responded to the call about 6:30 p.m.
“The call came in after she already jumped,” Warfield said.
She said the incident is under investigation, but it appears to be a “possible suicide.”
“At this point, I can’t say a whole lot because we are still on scene investigating and we are trying to figure out what happened,” Warfield said about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The woman has not been identified.
The incident backed up traffic and temporarily closed one lane of traffic on La Posta Road.
