Woman found dead under truck in Bayfield

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office suspects victim left vehicle in reverse and was run over

A 68-year-old Bayfield woman was found dead Tuesday after apparently having been run over and crushed by her own truck.

Gayle Norman was found dead about 4:30 p.m. by a relative. She was attempting to attach a boat trailer to the vehicle at the time she died. La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Upper Pine River Fire Protection District members responded to the scene, but authorities are uncertain as to how the woman ended up under the vehicle.

The investigation remained active Wednesday. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Burke said deputies believe the woman was backing up the truck and forgot to put the vehicle into park. The vehicle began to roll backward and when she realized it was still in reverse, she attempted to put it in park but got caught underneath the vehicle.

“We’re not sure if the vehicle was on an incline, and the investigation will reveal more of those details as to how the vehicle actually rolled and how the body made contact with the vehicle before she became underneath it,” he said.

Burke said Norman intended to take the boat out Wednesday.

No foul play is suspected.
