Woman ID’d in Cortez crash

A woman killed in a two-vehicle crash Sunday just south of Cortez has been identified as Peggy Scates, 81, of Cortez,

About noon Sunday, Scates was turning north in her white Ford Taurus onto Highway 160 from Montezuma County Road F, and she failed to yield to oncoming traffic, causing the driver of a southbound Dodge 2500 pickup to T-bone the vehicle, said Sgt. Rob Madden of the Colorado State Patrol.

The two-vehicle crash closed U.S. Highway 160 between Roads G and D just south of Cortez for several hours.

The driver of the Taurus died at Southwest Memorial Hospital. There were no passengers in her vehicle.

The driver of the Dodge pickup, 25-year-old Justin Duncan, of Shiprock, was treated for minor injuries. His pickup carried one passenger, who did not suffer injuries.

Earlier reports that five people were in the two vehicles were incorrect, Madden said.

The highway reopened to traffic about 3 p.m., Madden said.
