A 19-year-old woman died in the Cascade Creek waterfalls Sunday afternoon.
Haley Clarke, from Bayfield, drowned in the waterfalls, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page.
Crews with La Plata Search and Rescue and the Durango Fire Protection District helped recover Clarke’s body, according to the statement posted on the social media site.
“Our thoughts are with the Clarke family, and our gratitude with our rescuers,” the statement said.
Two other people were also rescued from the falls, said Ron Corkish, president of La Plata Search and Rescue.
Clarke’s family declined to comment Monday.
The flow in Cascade Creek is still high, and jumping the falls is not recommended, the statement advised.
Three men were rescued June 27 from the creek after they determined that the water was running “too high and fast” for jumping down the series of falls, they told rescuers.
