A 28-year-old woman was killed in a motorcycle crash Wednesday night on U.S. Highway 160 near Hesperus.
The woman appears be from South Dakota, said Capt. Adrian Driscoll, with the Colorado State Patrol in Durango, but he declined to release a name until immediate family members could be notified.
The crash occurred about 8:30 p.m. near mile marker 73, which is about a quarter mile east of La Plata Highway (Colorado Highway 140) at Hesperus.
The woman was traveling west toward Cortez when she struck a deer that apparently came from her left toward the north side of the highway, Driscoll said.
The woman was not wearing a helmet.
Neither speed, alcohol nor drugs are suspected as contributing factors, he said.
Both directions of travel on Highway 160 remained open, although westbound traffic was moved to one of the eastbound lanes.
