A La Plata County woman pleaded not guilty Tuesday to 114 counts of animal cruelty that were filed after a massive seizure of animals on her property in November.

Elizabeth Miera, who also goes by the last name Jackson, is scheduled for a motions hearing and pretrial conference June 26.

Miera’s partner, Jeffery Jackson, is charged with 115 counts of animal cruelty after the seizure. Jackson is scheduled for a jury trial July 12.

La Plata County Animal Protection, in conjunction with several other agencies, carried out the seizure Nov. 15, 2017, after an investigation into the mistreatment of animals on the property.

A previous visit revealed the property littered with trash, metal and other objects. Neighbors had long complained of the mess and the possible mistreatment of animals.

Animals seized from the property in southwestern La Plata County included chickens, cows, dogs, goats, horses, pigs, sheep, a burro, a cat and a duck.

Miera is also charged with two counts of unlawful possession of wildlife and unlawfully transporting portions of wildlife after investigators allegedly found a poached elk on the property during the seizure.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife later discovered that neither Jackson nor Miera had a license to hunt the elk legally. Only Miera is charged with the two counts.
