Woman run over on Mill Street, suffers broken leg

Mill Street in downtown Bayfield was shut town Friday morning as the Bayfield Marshal's Office investigated an incident where a woman was run over as she was getting out of a pickup.

The 43-year-old woman has a broken right leg and contusion to her right elbow, Marshal Joe McIntyre said at the scene as he was measuring points his office had marked out along the street.

The woman was getting out the vehicle, a 1999 Chevy Silverado, when the driver began to back up to leave, running over her. The driver is a 31-year-old male. Deputies found her lying on the ground in the westbound lane of Mill Street when they responded to the call.

She was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center by Upper Pine River Fire Protection District.

The incident happened at 7:53 a.m. on the 100 block of West Mill street, according to a press release from the marshal's office.

Names are being withheld pending further investigation. Alcohol or drugs didn't appear to be a factor, but will be investigated further, McIntyre said.

A two-block section of Mill Street between Bayfield Parkway and AJ's Pizza was closed all Friday morning and into the afternoon.

On Friday morning, McIntyre and Deputy Dan Cyr were measuring distances between different points they had marked along the street, showing where the pickup was parked, where it backed up, and a blood stain on the street asphalt. The man and woman appeared to be the only ones involved in the incident, McIntyre said.
