An Ignacio woman who is suspected of killing one man and injuring another after crashing into a parked truck last month was taken into jail custody Friday on suspicion of violating bail conditions.
Virginia Cundiff, 24, was arrested on suspicion of careless driving causing death, careless driving resulting in bodily injury, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on a suspended license, among other charges.
The crash occurred about 8:40 a.m. Feb. 10 on Colorado Highway 172, about 2½ miles south of Elmore’s Corner in La Plata County.
Cundiff was driving a 2015 Subaru WRX westbound when she drifted off the right side of the road and smashed into a work truck that was parked on the side of the road. Two men – Dominic Sandoval, 22, of Farmington, and George Sedlack, 53, of Colorado Springs – were setting up a work zone at the time of the crash, the Colorado State Patrol reported in an earlier interview.
Both men were outside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Sandoval fell into Cundiff’s windshield and died at the scene. Sedlack suffered three fractured ribs, an injured knee and had road rash on his back, shoulder and the top of his head, he said in a previous interview.
CSP troopers found drug paraphernalia and a syringe with what appeared to be a drug in her purse, according to an arrest affidavit.
After being treated at Mercy Hospital, Cundiff was booked into the La Plata County Jail.
She was released to pretrial services the next day and was to be monitored for drugs. On Feb. 21, Cundiff provided a urine sample at Peaceful Spirit, a subgroup of Southern Colorado Community Action Agency, which tested positive for methamphetamines, according to court records. She failed to appear for further substance testing on Feb. 25, which resulted in a warrant being issued for her arrest.
Deputy District Attorney Reid Stewart asked that Cundiff be placed back in jail because of her failure to appear. He said she is a danger to herself and the community at large.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Todd Norvell agreed. He ordered Cundiff to be placed in jail custody with a $10,000 bond. If released, she will be prohibited from driving and using drugs or alcohol.
“This is very serious what occurred, whether you classified it as a misdemeanor or a felony,” Norvell said. “Somebody’s dead.”
