Women’s Resource Center was busy in May

Anne Swisher, right, receives the Volunteer of the Year award for 2012 from Women’s Resource Center Executive Director Liz Mora in January 2013 at the Durango Community Recreation Center. Swisher has been an active leader of Womenade, a philanthropic effort that helps women and families with one-time emergency needs such as car repairs or medical bills, for several years. Seven women and families received emergency funding from Womenade in May.

The Women’s Resource Center helps women through connecting them with organizations that provide basic needs, makes available legal help for family issues at a low rate and helps women start and grow careers and businesses.

The need for the organization’s services continues to grow.

In resource and referral for the month of May, staff and volunteers worked with 83 clients, compared to 69 last year. The client tally year to date is 394 clients.

The top three referrals and outcomes were:

Financial assistance – 26 clients requested help, with seven of them receiving it through Womenade, a program where a group of women gather, put at least $25 into the pot, then vote on who they will help.

Food assistance – 17 women requested assistance, and 17 received it through a referral to an area food bank.

Legal Assistance – 17 women requested help, with four of them consulting with an attorney through WRC’s Lo Bono Program.

Nineteen clients used the office equipment for a total of 38 hours.

Volunteers worked a total of 35 hours in the month of May.

The Women’s Resource is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays. It’s located at 679 East Second Ave., Suite 6, and the phone number is 247-1242.

The WRC is holding one of its main fundraising events from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Buckley Park.
