Words of Thomas Paine are relevant now

I recall Thomas Paine’s comment in “The Crisis” on “summer soldiers” and “sunshine patriots” – both, he said, will shrink from duty in the face of a national crisis.

Today, anyone who is not deeply shocked by the timing and manner of the firing of FBI Director James Comey fits into the category of “summer soldier” or “sunshine patriot.”

Bear in mind: Comey had, just last week, requested of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein additional resources for the FBI’s investigation. Keep in mind, too, that our attorney general is the shady Jeff Sessions, who had to recuse himself from the House investigation.

It’s obvious to me that, in reply to his request, Comey was dismissed. Central also is the testimony of former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates (today my hero), whom Trump fired early in his tenure, to the Senate committee. Yates has given new energy to the investigation that Trump hates so direly.

Way I see it, the firing of Comey could bring Trump down or bring the U.S. down.

If you want the first outcome, make sure you’re not a summer soldier or a sunshine patriot. I’ll see you on the field of contention?
