Workshop to teach how to use Gaia map app

San Juan Mountains Association will host a GaiaGPS workshop from 5 to 8 p.m. April 23 at the San Juan Public Lands Center, 15 Burnett Court.

Ed Young, former course leader for Outward Bound and professional land surveyor, will lead the class.

The Gaia app allows users to track their hiking, biking or horse riding travels in real time on a U.S. Geological Survey topographic map on their cellphone.

The class is limited to 25 participants. To register, email kathe@sjma.org.

Once registered, participants will be sent a link for a free, one-month trial membership to Gaia Premium. Gaia is a paid subscription GPS service, which costs $19.99 per year at the basic level. The premium level is $39.99 a year.

Participants must have an iPhone 6 or later and come to class with the Gaia app loaded on their phone. Participants with an Android phone should have a newer version with plenty of memory.
