Nigerian general jailed for losing battle

LAGOS, Nigeria – A Nigerian general has been dismissed from the army and jailed for losing a major battle in which Boko Haram Islamic extremists killed hundreds of civilians, the military said Saturday.

Brig. Gen. Enitan Ransome Kuti – a nephew of Afrobeat music legend Fela Ransome-Kuti – was sentenced to six months’ jail for losing weapons to Boko Haram.

He was dismissed from the military for “failure to perform military duties.”

Drug lord flown to Sinaloan mountains

MEXICO CITY – Fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was flown to a mountainous region of his home state of Sinaloa following his daring July 11 escape from prison through a mile-long tunnel, a federal official said Saturday.

Late Friday, Mexico’s government said Guzman had avoided capture in an operation in the mountains of northwestern Mexico. Guzman is considered the power behind the lucrative Sinaloa Cartel.

Airstrikes mistakenly kill 20 troops in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen – Airstrikes from the Saudi-led coalition targeting Yemen’s Shiite Houthi rebels mistakenly struck a pro-government military encampment, killing at least 20 fighters and wounding 20, security officials said Saturday.

The fighters had just wrestled the encampment from the Houthis in the southern Taiz province when airstrikes hit them, pro-government security officials said.
