Ancient Roman coins found in Spain

MADRID – Workers laying pipes in a southern Spanish park have unearthed a 1,300-pound trove of Roman coins in what culture officials say is a unique discovery.

The Seville Archaeological Museum says the construction workers came across 19 amphoras containing thousands of unused bronze and silver-coated coins dating from the end of the 4th century.

The coins are believed to have been recently minted at the time and had probably been stored to pay soldiers or civil servants.

The regional cultural department said Friday construction work in the park has been halted while archaeologists investigate further.

The Romans began to conquer Spain in 218 B.C. and ruled until the fifth century.

Weasel shuts down Hadron Collider

GENEVA – It’s one of the physics world’s most complex machines, and it has been immobilized temporarily by a weasel.

Spokesman Arnaud Marsollier says the world’s largest atom smasher, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN outside of Geneva, has suspended operations because a weasel invaded a transformer that helps power the machine and set off an electrical outage on Thursday night.

Authorities say the incident was one of several small glitches that will delay plans to restart the $4.4 billion collider by a few days.

Marsollier says Friday that the weasel died and little remains of it.

Yemeni protesters urge end of fighting

SANAA, Yemen – Thousands of Yemenis took to the streets on Friday to call for an end to the fighting in the country’s conflict.

In the city of Taiz, thousands marched after prayers, residents said. The city has been besieged for months by rebels, known as Houthis, who residents and aid groups say have been indiscriminately shelling Taiz and blocking humanitarian aid deliveries.

“We seek to draw the attention of the international community,” said demonstrator Mahyoob al-Khalidi, urging the rebels to adopt a UN resolution calling for a cease-fire.
