Sweden ends hunt for foreign sub

STOCKHOLM – Sweden called off a week-long hunt for a suspected foreign vessel in the waters of the Stockholm archipelago, ending its biggest naval mobilization since the Cold War.

“The main part of the marine intelligence operation in the Stockholm archipelago” were ended at 8 a.m. local time Friday with most ships and staff having returned to base, the Armed Forces said in a statement. Some ground units remain in the area “with specific tasks,” it said.

As local media has speculated that the vessel is a damaged Russian submarine, the navy has refrained from commenting on its origins. The army said it received five credible reports of sightings since the chase began last Friday and that it’s “very likely” a foreign vessel has been hiding in its waters.

Toddler may have infected others

DAKAR, Senegal – The World Health Organization says a toddler who brought Ebola to Mali was bleeding from her nose during her journey on public transport and may have infected many people.

WHO said it is treating the situation in Mali as an emergency.

The 2-year-old girl, who traveled from Guinea with her grandmother, tested positive for Ebola on Thursday.

WHO said Friday the girl and her grandmother passed through several towns in Mali on their trip from Guinea and spent two hours in the Malian capital of Bamako before ending up in the city of Kayes.
