Diplomacy has failed, Egypt president says
CAIRO — Egypt’s presidency said Wednesday that diplomatic efforts to peacefully resolve the standoff between the country’s military-backed interim leadership and the Muslim Brotherhood have failed.
The statement from interim President Adly Mansour’s office follows a flurry of diplomatic visits over the last two weeks by envoys from the United States, the European Union and Arab Gulf states to defuse the crisis between the government and supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, a longtime Brotherhood member.
The Brotherhood could not be immediately reached for comment.
The statement did not say what the interim leadership’s next step would be but stressed that it would be legal.
Libyan denies any role in Benghazi attack
TRIPOLI, Libya — A former Libyan militia commander on Wednesday denied charges filed in U.S. federal court accusing him of being involved in an attack that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.
Ahmed Abu Khattala told The Associated Press that he was not in hiding, nor had he been questioned by Libyan authorities over the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. That assault killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and sparked Republican-led investigations in Congress about the attack and its aftermath.
Khattala repeatedly has denied being involved in the attack.“
