Singapore ruling party wins re-election

SINGAPORE – The party that has ruled Singapore for a half-century has returned to power for five more years after winning a majority in a general election.

The People’s Action Party won 49 of the 50 seats for which results have been announced so far in the 89-member Parliament in Friday’s elections. The Workers’ Party won 1 seat.

The opposition apparently failed to capitalize on public dissatisfaction over huge income disparity, restrictions on free speech, overcrowding caused by immigration, and the rising cost of living – Singapore is the world’s most expensive city, according to an international survey.

Accident kills dozens at Grand Mosque

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia’s civil defense authority says at least 62 people have been killed after a crane collapsed on the Grand Mosque in the holy city of Mecca.

The authority announced the collapse and the casualty numbers on its official Twitter account. It says nearly 30 others were injured in the crane collapse on Friday.

Mecca is Islam’s holiest site. Pilgrims from around the world have been converging on the city and the mosque for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which takes place this month.

Man reports finding Nazi-era bunker

WARSAW, Poland – A Polish explorer claimed Friday he has found a massive underground structure in southwestern Poland that, he says, the Nazis built to protect thousands of people.

Krzysztof Szpakowski told a news conference that he has no doubt as to his find, which he says was based on evidence that he has gathered for decades, including witness statements, old documents and an examination of the area by ground-penetrating radar and by dowsers.

Speaking on TVN24, Szpakowski said the structure was part of the “Riese” (giant) system of railway tunnels, corridors and shelters that the Nazis were building during World War II in the mountains around the city of Walbrzych.
