Putin orders sanctions against Turkey, goods
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday called for sanctions against Turkey, following the downing by Turkey of a Russian warplane.
The decree came hours after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had voiced regret over the incident, saying his country was “truly saddened” by the event and wished it hadn’t occurred.
The decree includes a ban on some goods and forbids extensions of labor contracts for Turks working in Russia as of Jan. 1.
Nigerian officials search for Poles
LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigerian security agencies are conducting a “spirited search” for the Polish captain and four crew members abducted from a cargo ship, an official said Saturday.
The attacked ship MV Szafir was recovered and 11 crew members rescued a few miles offshore. The ship was damaged when pirates fired on it Thursday. Officials in Poland are expecting a ransom demand might be made.
Mortar attack on UN base kills 3, injures 20
DAKAR, Senegal – Mortars were fired on a United Nations base in the northern Mali city of Kidal early Saturday, killing at least three people.
The attack came eight days after Islamic extremists attacked a luxury hotel further south in the capital, Bamako, in which 20 people were killed.
Two UN peacekeepers and a contractor were killed, and 20 others were injured, four in serious condition. No group claimed responsibility.
