Barriers remain for peace in Colombia

BOGOTA, Colombia – A diplomatic breakthrough leaves many problems standing between Colombia and the prospect of peace after generations of armed conflict.

President Juan Manuel Santos and leaders of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia are celebrating the announcement that they had crossed what many see as the point of no return after three years of peace talks by settling on a formula to punish human rights abuses.

They set a six-month deadline to sign an agreement ending more than half a century of drug-fueled fighting. Still to resolve, though, are legal obstacles, such as dozens of U.S. drug warrants for rebels and the threat of lawsuits by victims.

Tensions rise with Croatia and Serbia

ZAGREB, Croatia – Tensions escalated between Serbia and Croatia on Thursday as the longtime rivals struggled to come up with a coherent way to deal with tens of thousands of migrants streaming through the Balkan nations.

Serbia banned imports from Croatia to protest Croatia’s decision to close the border to cargo as the two criticized each other for their handling of migrants. Croatia responded by banning all Serbian-registered vehicles from entering the country.
