Bayfield High School came up with solid results Saturday at the Bulldog Invitational at Pueblo Centennial.
The Wolverines scored 79 points to finish 11th out of 21 teams at the high school wrestling tournament. Dumas won the meet with 213.5 points, and Grand Junction Central was second with 154.
Garrett Beebe (138 pounds) and Jake Sandrey (145) both placed second in their respective weight classes. Beebe, who is now 21-5 this season, earned one pin and two decisions on his way to the first-place match. He was pinned with two seconds to go in the first period by Mead’s Jeremy Ashton. Beebe scored 20 points for the team.
Sandrey, who is now 21-6, earned two pins and a tech fall win before he was pinned by Dumas’ Braxton Montgomery with four seconds to go in the first period. He scored 23.5 points for Bayfield.
Bayfield’s John Foutz (195) scored 18 points for the team and placed fourth. After a pin win in the first round and then a loss to undefeated Dahlton McGhee of Fowler in the quarterfinals, Foutz regrouped and won two consolation matches to get into the third-place match. He dropped an 11-6 decision to Sierra’s Donavin Bedburdick in the third-place match.
Daniel Westbrook (220) placed sixth and scored nine points for the Wolverines. He earned a pin in the quarterfinal to reach the semifinals but lost a 12-1 major decision to Grand Junction Central’s Weston Holdren.
Dylan Pickering scored 3.5 points for Bayfield at 113 pounds. He earned a tech fall win in the first round. Colby Baker (120) and Jason Schneider (152) each scored three points for Bayfield with one win each.
The 2018 Arvada West Invitational was a tough competition for the Demons.
Durango placed 22nd out of 24 teams at the wrestling meet with 24 points. Grand Junction won with 201 points, and Pueblo County was second with 187.
Kaleb McMunn had the best meet out of the Durango wrestlers. The 160 pounder placed sixth and scored 11 points. He reached the quarterfinal with a 6-3 decision win against Grand Junction’s Christian Hafey but dropped a 7-5 decision to Garden City’s Jacob Sims in the quarterfinals. McMunn then won two matches in a row before falling in the fourth round of consolation matches.
Paul Smagacz (120) scored five points for Durango. He lost his first match and earned two byes before he won a third-period pin against Pomona’s Nicholas Evans in the fourth consolation round. He then beat Grand Junction’s Kaylee Lacy in an 8-6 decision.
Alex Finneseth (132) scored three points for Durango. After losing in the first round, he earned two byes and then secured two decision wins.
Austin Albrecht (170) scored four points for Durango. He earned a first-period pin in the first round against Durango teammate Dominique Maestas before he was pinned twice to round out his three matches.
With a limited roster, the Ignacio wrestling team finished 30th out of 32 teams with 16 points at the Mel Smith Wrestling Invitational in Florence.
Pagosa Springs continued to prove it is a Class 3A state title contender with 158 points for first place. Eaton was second with 155 points, and Valley finished third with 151 in the tightly-contested tournament.
No Bobcats placed at the big meet, but Dustin Sanchez scored eight points at 152 pounds. He went 3-2 with three pin wins and one pin loss and won decision loss.
Skieler Grooms (138) and Hunter Robbins (120) each scored four points for Ignacio. Grooms went 1-2 with a pin win and two pin losses. Robbins went 1-2 with a pin win, a pin loss and a major decision loss.
