YAFL talks about playoffs

Durango youth football’s regular season ends with a trio of victories

Four Durango Youth American Football League teams will be in the playoffs after regular season play concluded over the weekend.

The fifth-grade Demons will host the Farmington Wolfpack in the Four Corners YAFL playoffs first round at 9 a.m. Saturday at Miller Middle school.

Also on Saturday, the third-grade Demons will play the Farmington Bulldawgs at 9 a.m. in Aztec, the fourth-grade Demons will play the Farmington Punishers at 9 a.m. in Bloomfield, and the sixth-grade Demons White will play the Farmington Demolition at 11 a.m. in Farmington.

The league went 3-2-1 over the weekend to finish with an 18-19-1 record for the regular season.

The second-grade Demons (1-3-1) finished their season with a 21-21 tie against Bayfield.

Cayden Hartman ran for two touchdowns, while Tyler Harms scored the third.

Derek Lancaster recovered a fumble for the defense.

The third-grade Demons (3-4) lost 12-0 to Bayfield in their final regular season game.

Jake Swift ran for three touchdowns in the fourth-grade Demons’ 18-6 win over the Aztec Apes. Durango finishes the season at 3-4.

The fifth-grade Demons (5-0) beat the previously undefeated Aztec Tiger Orange 34-6 to win the East Division championship.

Gage Mestas ran for three touchdowns in the game.

Hazen Mestas ran for a touchdown, while Niko Mestas caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Woolverton.

Derek Carman and Ty Martinez intercepted passes, and Demetrius Trujillo picked up a safety on a sack for the Demons’ defense.

The sixth-grade Demons (5-2) overcame a 12-0 second quarter deficit to defeat the Farmington Chargers 13-12.

The victory clinched a No. 2 seed in the playoffs out of the West Conference.

The sixth-grade Demons Red (2-5) lost 26-0 at Bayfield in their final game of the year.
