Yampah students climb, hike to fight cancer

GLENWOOD SPRINGS (AP) – For the 10th consecutive year, Yampah Mountain High School students will participate in the Climb4Life in Salt Lake City.

Climb4Life lets students turn their rock-climbing passion into action to help find a cure for ovarian cancer, a cause near and dear to Yampah Mountain students.

Yampah lost teacher Sandy Richardson to the disease about 10 years ago, and continued student participation in the Climb4Life supports the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation’s effort to find a cure.

The Climb4Life series began in 2001 to raise awareness in women who are healthy and active, empowering them to take charge of their health and wellness.

Yampah students have enjoyed climbing at the event, but they also have become committed to building awareness about this often overlooked disease.

As part of the schoolwide fundraiser, Yampah students this week screened a half-hour film about Sean Patrick, who lived in Carbondale and founded HERA and Climb4Life. Sean was a national leader in spreading awareness about ovarian cancer and raising research money to find a cure.

Climb4Life Utah will begin today and run through Sunday. It is HERA’s longest-running fundraising event, now in its 12th year. It features a weekend of climbing, hiking or photographing in the canyons of the Wasatch Mountains.

This event is part of a national series that raises money for ovarian cancer research and awareness initiatives. HERA – which stands for health, empowerment, research and awareness – brings together women, men and teens to climb for a cause.
