Spring has sprung in Durango, and as the weather warms, more people will be having garage sales. However, many residents don’t realize that yard signs have to be permitted by the city of Durango.
Temporary signs, such as yard and garage sales, are permitted for 48 hours and are free.
“That is to make sure that people pick them up afterward,” said Crystal Twedt, community development coordinator. “So they’re not scattered around forever.”
The signs are usually put up in the city’s right-of-way, which is any part the street, alley and sidewalk. They can’t be bigger than 4-square-feet in size, and residents are limited to 6 total signs. Each sign must have a Public Works sticker.
Signs can’t be posted on utility poles, traffic signs or nailed onto trees or located in the Central Business District. Balloons, streamers and other distracting accessories are banned.
Putting up these signs without a permit can earn a fine, Not taking them down after two days can result in a fine of up to $1,000 for each day of violation.
