We have a grand array of entertainment in store for you this month as we end this school year at Fort Lewis College.
“Two Halves Form a Whole,” the art department’s graduating senior art and design majors exhibition, runs from March 31 through April 28. The works on display in the FLC Art Gallery will show advanced projects in media ranging from graphic design to fine art.
At 7 p.m. April 14 in the concert hall will be the Symphonic Band and the Jazz Ensemble. Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John O’Neal, will open the concert with a varied program, including Sammy Nestico’s Basie “Straight Ahead” and John LaBarbera’s hard rocking “Sassy Strut.”Also featured will be brand new compositions from one of our nation’s premiere military jazz ensembles, The Jazz Ambassadors of the United States Army. Several works from their “Perspectives” initiative will be presented, including Vince Norman’s A New Standard and his tribute to cartoonist Charles Schulz, “Goodbye Mr. Schulz.”
The Symphonic Band, Dr. Mark Walters, director, will perform original works along with an exquisite orchestral transcription. They’ll begin with Richard Saucedo’s light overture “Whirlwinds” followed by Frank Ticheli’s “Sanctuary,” featuring horn, clarinet and flute solos. Percy Grainger’s “Children’s March” is hardly a march in the traditional sense. Based on a very childlike melody, “Over the Hills and Far Away,” Grainger transforms this melody through many stages of this complex work.
American composer Julie Giroux takes us to the edges of humanity in the composition, “K2: The Savage Mountain.”
Dmitri Shostakovich’s Waltz #2 is an orchestral transcription that has found its way into American pop culture in movie scores and television commercials. Immediately recognizable, it displays Shostaskovich’s ability to combine the sublimely melancholy melody that at times becomes joyously ceremonial.
The symphonic band will conclude the program with an original classic for band, Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo by Malcolm Arnold. This suite again features soloist throughout the ensemble and ends with a rousing high-tempo Rondo movement.
FLC’s choirs are presenting a spring concert at 7 p.m. April 20 with the central theme of celebrating student work and achievement. Students have put together small chamber ensembles, rehearse some of their own sectionals and showcase independent vocal work through a wide array of solos. The choirs will sing original compositions by four different student composers, along with excerpts from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, and a mix of rhythmic, lyrical and familiar tunes. Watch out for a rocking finale featuring a faculty band!
The concert hall closes the month with MOMIX Opus Cactus at 7:30 p.m. April 25. MOMIX brings the landscape of the American Southwest to life with the company’s signature illusionistic style in Opus Cactus – a dynamic journey into the hidden landscape of the region with a sense of danger, sensuality and humor.
Three music majors will present solo recitals in April. Rachel Moore, junior pianist at 5:30 p.m. April 13; Jimmie Noel, graduating senior guitarist at 7 p.m. on the 21st; and Shishan Wong, graduating senior flutist at 3 p.m. on the 23rd. All are free and will be held in Roshong Recital Hall.
