Yes, it does indeed make a difference

I offer a different perspective than Mr. Leo McCormick in his recent letter, in which he downplayed the severity of Russia’s cyber warfare involvement in our election (Herald, Dec. 23).

Within a few weeks, our intelligence services, along with the FBI, will produce a consensus report detailing Russia’s involvement in last month’s election. I am confident that every bit of information that does not jeopardize national security will be included in this report.

For reference, Russia committing cyber attacks against the internal affairs of other countries is not new. Several of Russia’s neighbors have complained about Russian interference in recent years.

In addition to the report, I suggest we be very wary of Vladimir Putin. This former KGB operative has been in control of Russia since 1999. He has effectively become Russia’s new dictator. Russia’s version of “democracy” as practiced by Mr. Putin includes murdering some of his political rivals. Also on his hit list have been Russian journalists who dared to speak inconvenient truths.

We must prevent all future foreign interference in our elections. It will soon become clear from the intelligence report that the Russian government, using cyber espionage, attacked the United States.

Most troubling of all, their attack was precisely aimed at the very core of our great nation, our democracy.
