‘You have a say in energy consumption’

Local energy politics affect everyone, and we youth of Durango want to see more people active in the conversation. Many people either do not take an interest in our energy consumption or even know where to start in order to learn more. Energy is an important part of the U.S. especially, so why does this topic seem so neglected?

The Four Corners’ energy is built on fossil fuels and according to National Geographic in an article from 2022, 81% of our energy in the U.S. is supported by fossil fuels. These fuels are a nonrenewable source of energy and are majorly responsible for our carbon emissions globally.

Not only is the way our energy is created problematic for our environment, but the means of accessing these resources is an equally destructive contributor. Drilling, fracking and gas wells cover our land, creating great risk to the land and the people who inhabit it. Polluted air and water become more and more common, usually affecting people who don’t have the privilege of avoiding these pollutants.

We’ve been told for too long by adults that our environment will have to be pushed to us – youth – to be solved, but why not start now? The San Juan Citizens Alliance is a great organization to look into. Its website provides many sources to learn more about how you can help. Your votes matter, your voices matter and you have a say in our energy consumption.
