Young people: Gear up to cast your vote

The League of Women Voters is celebrating February as National Youth Voter Month, helping young people to learn about voting and to become part of the electoral process.

The first step for every voter is to register. In Colorado, voter pre-registration can be done on or after the 16th birthday in preparation for voting at 18. Do it when you take your driver’s license test. Do it from your smart phone or at GoVoteColorado.com. Do it in person at the County Clerk’s office. It is quick, easy and the first step to becoming an informed voter.

The next step could be to check out the League’s non-partisan election information at VOTE411.org. This site has basic information, including how to get a ballot and update your address, and candidate profiles at election time.

Voting is a basic right, and duty, of citizenship for all of us, young or old. Elections can be decided by one vote. But if you don’t register and cast your ballot, that can never be your vote.
