Your investment at work: Strengthening La Plata County roads and infrastructure

In November, La Plata County voters made an important investment in the future of our community by approving Ballot Issue 1A. On behalf of the board of county commissioners, we want to thank our residents for their support and confidence in county government.

Matt Salka

Your vote reflected a commitment to maintaining essential services and addressing long-standing infrastructure needs that impact all of us every day.

One of the most visible areas where residents will see the impact of 1A funding is within our Road and Bridge Department.

Elizabeth Philbrick

La Plata County maintains more than 650 miles of roads, including paved and gravel roadways that connect our neighborhoods, businesses, schools, farms, ranches and recreational destinations. These roads are critical to our local economy, emergency response capabilities and overall quality of life. Maintaining such a large network across a geographically diverse county is a significant responsibility and one that becomes more challenging each year as costs for equipment, materials, fuel and labor continue to rise.

Marsha Porter-Norton

For many years, our Road and Bridge Department has worked diligently to stretch limited resources as far as possible. Crews have continued to provide essential maintenance, grading, snow removal, drainage improvements, paving and emergency repairs despite growing demands and increasing costs. While they have accomplished a tremendous amount with the resources available, the reality is that the need has often exceeded the funding available.

The passage of 1A provides a dedicated local funding source that will help us begin addressing those challenges. The money will allow the county to invest in critical road infrastructure, improve maintenance operations, replace aging equipment and make strategic improvements that benefit residents across all areas of La Plata County.

As we begin putting these resources to work, residents will start to notice informational signs and decals on equipment, infrastructure projects and other improvements funded by 1A revenue. These markers serve an important purpose: transparency and accountability.

We believe residents deserve to know how their tax dollars are being invested. When you see a sign identifying a project or piece of equipment funded through 1A, it represents a direct connection between the support provided by county voters and tangible improvements occurring within our community.

Whether it is a new piece of road maintenance equipment, upgraded infrastructure, drainage improvements, roadway enhancements or other investments that help our crews operate more efficiently, we want residents to clearly see where these dollars are being utilized.

The goal is simple: demonstrate that voter-approved funding is producing measurable results.

We also recognize that infrastructure improvements do not happen overnight. Road construction seasons are limited, equipment purchases take time, and long-term maintenance planning requires careful prioritization. The board remains committed to ensuring that 1A money is invested responsibly and strategically to achieve the greatest benefit for the community.

Our Road and Bridge employees deserve special recognition for the work they perform every day. From clearing snow during winter storms to repairing roads after flooding events, maintaining drainage systems, grading gravel roads and responding to emergencies, these dedicated public servants work in all conditions to keep our transportation network functioning safely and reliably. Much of their work occurs behind the scenes, but its importance cannot be overstated.

As we move forward, we remain committed to providing regular updates on projects, purchase and improvements made possible through 1A. Transparency was an important part of the conversation leading up to the election, and it remains a priority today.

The residents of La Plata County placed their trust in us by approving this investment. We take that responsibility seriously. By identifying projects funded through 1A and sharing progress with the public, we hope to ensure that every resident can see firsthand how their investment is strengthening our infrastructure and improving county services.

Thank you again to the voters of La Plata County for your support. Together, we are making meaningful investments that will benefit our community today while building a stronger foundation for future generations.
