Celebrating Healthy Communities is seeking nominations from young people for adult role models in the county. The nomination deadline is April 29.
Role model awards will be given in Ignacio, Bayfield, Durango, and for the Latino and Native American communities. This is the fourth year for the awards.
Youth who submit a complete nomination form (an adult can help) will be entered to win an iPad Mini 2 courtesy of the Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County.
The adult role model awards are a cooperative project by Celebrating Healthy Communities, San Juan Basin Health, and the Boys & Girls Club. It is part of promoting youth developmental assets. There are 40 of those. Half are external factors like positive adult role models, and half are internal factors. The more of the assets young people identify with, the more likely they are to make positive life choices and avoid risky behavior.
In the 2015 developmental asset survey, only 37 percent of local middle and high school students perceived parents or other adults to be modeling positive, responsible behavior. This concerning but improving perception inspired the Adult Role Model campaign.
