If the local political elections haven’t caught your attention, let me raise the prospect of a new face for the Western Slope.
Former teacher and journalist Barbara McLachlan is running for Colorado House District 59. She won’t contribute to negative ideas and comments so prevalent in today’s media; instead, she will bring fresh energy to the current state of moribund Colorado politics.
This fourth-generation Coloradoan knows we have issues to address with respect to wages, water, mining, pollution, educational and medical funding. These are complex issues of concern to all ages.
As an educator, student success was McLachlan’s mantra:“I always loved it when my students accomplished something they didn’t think they could – writing an essay, reading and understanding a complicated book, analyzing, presenting or having an article published in the newspaper. It’s a thrill when the light bulb goes on.”
Challenging students as McLachlan did taught them discipline and respect. She took pride in seeing students graduate, taking newfound skills and great expectations for their future and that of our country.
For her efforts, McLachlan was named 2012 Durango School District 9-R secondary school Teacher of the Year by the Durango Education Foundation. Her zeal to achieve is notably needed in HD59 and would be a breath of much-desired fresh air.
Get behind her campaign, ask her views on issues of concern to you, discuss her candidacy with your friends and contribute to her campaign. Odds are, she has made a difference for a young person you have known.
