Thanks, Mike, for checking on recycling

Did you see the “60 Minutes” segment on Aug. 18 about the way plastic waste is polluting our environment?

Wondered how many were as horrified as I was to see how plastic is taking over the oceans and some of the poorest communities of our world – what a sad legacy to leave to our kids and grandkids!

I was pleased to learn in Mike Smedley’s column that our local plastic waste is apparently being recycled more effectively than in other places – thanks, Mike, for checking on that.

Nevertheless, it is alarming that plastic is being used and discarded by us so profusely. With a new awareness, I have a new respect for everything plastic I pick up, from one-time-use plastic bottles, to cups, plates, plastic ware, sandwich bags, packaging, wrappings and much more.

In addition to our being more respectful of its use and disposal, perhaps the companies that produce and/or benefit from the use of plastics could also be held more responsible – perhaps even be expected to invest in finding new uses for this material it benefits from that’s so environmentally hazardous.

After all, should we be using it at all if it can’t be made biodegradable, discarded and/or reused safely?
