Do not sign to recall extraordinary voice

Decline to sign the circulating petitions for unfounded efforts to recall Commissioner Gwen Lachelt.

The effort is backed by dangerous influence of strangers – “Americans For Prosperity (backed by the Koch brothers) has turned to homing in on smaller communities in an effort to oust progressive elected officials …” Durango Herald (Jan. 29).

Gwen is a living model amongst us of integrity, not ethics violations; commitment with stellar attendance at commissioner meetings; of listening, deliberating and voting based on science, experience and study (she has not cast votes against gas and oil interests during her tenure); of determination and courage to speak for her constituents at all levels, including to key representatives in Washington.

Let’s all strive to emulate Gwen’s passion for the greater good of this county. Taxpayers cannot afford the cost of a recall election, financially – $58,000 – or staff time much needed for simultaneous elections required by law.

More importantly, we cannot afford to lose this strong, extraordinary voice making a substantial difference for us all. “Decline to Sign” circulating recall petitions orchestrated by strangers to the culture and needs of our county.
