The Durango High School boys lacrosse team snapped its two-game losing streak with a big fourth quarter en route to a 10-7 victory against Montrose on Friday afternoon in Montrose.
The Demons (8-5, 3-5 Mountain League) and Indians (2-13, 1-8 ML) were tied 7-7 after three quarters, but DHS put together an inspired performance in the fourth to spoil Montrose’s senior day.
“Senior Ramon Perez stepped in goal and made two saves while we were two men down and up by two in the fourth,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “He’s never played goalie in a game, only started playing lacrosse this spring and only practiced as a goalie a couple times.”
Ryan Smith led DHS with four goals to go with one assist. Cullen Robinette netted three goals and had two assists, Matt Tucker added two goals and an assist, and Tommy Rodgers had one goal, two assists and eight groundballs.
Dylan Gaver made 14 saves in goal and had seven goals against. Along with the strong game in front of the net, Gaver connected with Cullen Robinette on a 70-yard pass that led to a goal and an assist for the goalie.
“I was very happy for the boys today, to see them close this one out and get the win,” coach Robinette said. “Especially proud of the seniors Matt Tucker, Ryan Smith, Harrison Kairalla, Ramon Perez, Corbin Rieter and Tommy Rodgers for their composure and leadership.”
DHS will close out the regular season Saturday at Aspen (11-2, 9-0 ML).
Baseball
BaseballThe Fruita Monument High School baseball team kept its perfect league record in tact with an 8-3 victory against Durango on Friday in Fruita.
The Wildcats (14-4, 7-0 5A/4A Southwestern League) jumped out to a big lead with five runs in the second inning, added two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth.
Durango (10-7, 3-4 SWL) scored all three of its runs in the seventh inning.
The Demons were held to three hits and struck out 10 times in the game.
Kegan D’Aleo was 1-for-2 and scored one run after he reached on an error in the seventh inning. Quelan Mestas was 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh, and Jordan Woolverton was 1-for-3.
Dawson Marcum had one RBI, and the other DHS run came when Gavin Mestas scored on an error.
Gavin Mestas took the loss for DHS. He pitched five innings and allowed seven runs – five earned – on nine hits and one walk. He struck out four batters.
Gage Mestas pitched one inning in relief. He allowed one earned run on two hits, two walks and struck out one.
Game 2 of the series will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fruita.
Girls Soccer
Girls SoccerIgnacio High School’s girls soccer team doubled its goal total for the season, but it wasn’t enough to earn the Bobcats their first win, as they fell to Del Norte 8-3 in their season finale Friday in Del Norte.
The Bobcats got off a dozen shots in the match, four of which were on goal.
Abbi Barthel scored twice for Ignacio (0-15, 0-10 2A Region 4), with goals in the 67th and 72nd minutes, and Lauren Gram had the third goal in the 76th minute.
Del Norte (11-4, 5-2 2A Region 4) held an 8-0 lead a little more than 10 minutes into the second half. Kendra Parra had four goals and two assists to lead the Tigers. Chloe McComas had two goals and one assist, Sophia McConnell had one goal and two assists, and Grace Whitehorn added one goal. Emily Gallegos recorded two assists, and Shaelynn Mondragon had one assist.
The Durango High School boys swimming team couldn’t keep pace with Montrose, as the Indians swam away for a 130-42 win against the Demons on Friday at Fort Lewis College.
The Demons picked up wins from Emmett Stottlemyer in the 50-meter freestyle and the 500 freestyle.
Stottlemyer won the 50 with a time of 23.86 seconds, which was 1.62 seconds ahead of Montrose’s Mel Littlefield in second place. Durango’s Nick Piccaro was third in 25.82.
No one was even close to Stottlemyer in the 500 freestyle, as he finished in 5:06.02. Garth Knutson of Montrose was second in 5:43.54.
Durango’s Jason Maynes was second in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle.
Aaron Clark was second in the 100 freestyle for DHS.
