There are two proposed “no-wake” areas at Lake Nighthorse that are separated by more than two miles of “open-use area.” The eastern 150-acre no-wake area is located near the swimming beach, the other 350-acre no-wake area is in the far western bay.
Kayaks, paddle boards, windsurfers, canoes and row boats would negotiate 2.5 miles along the shore line to cross the lake. The proposed vertical division is a barrier creating a challenge to the shore exit when weather changes.
I suggest creating a horizontal division (north for small boats/south for power boats) that would unify the two no-wake areas.
A better lake experience could include more of the northern shore for water sports and fishing, also shortening the distance back to the restrooms.
We must have power boats, however, registered boat owners represent less than 4 percent of La Plata County residents.
Please consider the other 96 percent that would like to share more of the lake with people-powered crafts.
Parks and Recreation and City Council have the challenge of providing a safe, user -friendly area for the adults and children that will enjoy Lake Nighthorse.
