The Ignacio High School baseball team got strong pitching from Zach Weinrich and Austin McCaw to seal a 8-5 victory against the visiting Nucla Mustangs on Saturday.
Weinrich only needed three innings to put up five strikeouts, which was good enough for the win. McCaw came on in relief for the remaining four innings to earn a rare four-inning save.
“We threw extremely well,” said Ignacio head coach Robert Miller. “We kept the pitch count down, and we’re still trying to develop arms.”
Ignacio (5-3, 1-0 2A District 2 League) was ahead the whole game and saw Tucker Ward go 3-for-4 including a double and two runs batted in.
While McCaw held Nucla (3-7, 1-0 1A District 1 League) at check on the mound, he went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs at the plate. Kai Rubideaux went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
“Our outfield played stellar,” Miller said. “Our team ran the bases aggressively and took advantage of their opportunities. We ran extremely well and pitched extremely well.”
Nucla’s Devyn Rummel got the loss on the mound for the Mustangs. He went the full seven innings.
“We had a lot of key hits,” Miller said. “(Rummel) is one of the better pitchers that we’ve faced all year. They’re a well-coached team, they play good ball.”
Ignacio will take on Dolores at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ignacio High School.
