Guess what: We can’t help the homeless

The liberals have come out, in their letters opposing the obvious truths of Eileen Wright’s letter to the editor a few weeks ago “

Quit spending taxpayer dollars to fix what can’t be fixed. It is politically correct to say we want to help the homeless, and most of us want to. Guess what: We can’t do it. Untold millions have been spent to try to solve the problem. No progress is being made.

All we are doing is being enablers. Meals from Manna Soup Kitchen should only be for individuals who want to contribute to the community. People who break the laws should be arrested and required to perform community service. Panhandlers should be sentenced to community service.

The ACLU will be extremely busy once communities start doing the right thing; there might be some money left from funds that aren’t wasted on ineffective programs to fight ACLU’s agenda until it starts using common sense.

Let’s put our money toward programs that will let these people benefit the community. Any person receiving any support should be required to show proof of employment or sign up to participate in one of the programs that will be created for them to be productive in the betterment of Durango and La Plata County.

This type of approach will cost considerably less than providing homes for the homeless, for those that may just stay in town to tap even more welfare services.

Residents in towns and cities all across the country have had enough of homelessness problems and are wanting real progress instead of all the failed feel-good efforts. They have voted that way.

It is time to admit what is obvious: Liberal thinking has only produced programs that waste taxpayer dollars.
