Durango High School golfer Lucas Robbins fires 76, earns trip to state

DHS senior’s 76 qualifies for state

Durango High School senior Lucas Robbins has seen the guys before him get many shots at the state tournament, and after his 76 Monday at Fruita’s Adobe Creek National Golf Course, he’ll get his shot, too.

Robbins’ score tied him for seventh overall at the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 4A Region 4 Tournament and the Demons finished in fifth-place out of 15 teams, three spots short of qualifying as a team.

Caleb Newman shot a 9-over par 81 for Durango and Ryan Genualdi fired an 82. Ethan Whidden rounded out the Demons’ effort with a 91. Durango head coach Kirk Rawles had set a target goal of 240 for his team, which they bested by a shot, but it wasn’t sharp enough.

Montrose’s 223 was led by freshman medalist Micah Stangebye, who shot a sparkling 3-under par score of 69. Steady senior Glen-Michael Mihavetz, also of Montrose, finished in a tie for third with a 73.

“I thought we played really well,” Rawles said. “Lucas fed off his recent hot streak and the other guys didn’t play their best but posted good scores. This team has come a long way this year.”

With Montrose taking the title, it came down to a playoff between Evergreen and Mullen for the second team spot after both teams finished at 231, and Mullen took the victory.

Robbins and the rest will travel to Carbondale’s River Valley Ranch Golf Club Monday and Tuesday for the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Class 4A State Golf Tournament.

“Lucas has been playing very well lately,” Rawles said. “He shot 75 at Dalton Ranch last week and shot 34 in a 9-hole practice round this week so he’s playing his best at the right time.”
