I am on the Durango Library Advisory Board and am a passionate advocate for our library.
When I moved to Durango in 2015, I did two things almost immediately: I registered my change of address, to vote, and I applied for a library card. The first time I drove to the library on a Sunday, I was surprised that it was closed. I was unfamiliar then with the history behind this.
During the 2009 budget crunch, the library and its board did its civic duty and sacrificed Sunday openings and the necessary extra staff hours to help the city’s problematic financial situation. The library and board were promised it would be a short-term sacrifice.
In recent surveys, we said one of our priorities is to bring back open-library Sundays. A decade is long enough. The library is the only city department that has not been restored to its 2009 levels.
Please contact our city councilors to let them know we want Sunday openings and extension of staff hours restored. This is affordable; we just need to let them know this is what we want.
