100 years ago: It was announced that Chevrolet owners could get first-class service and repair work done at Marvel Motor Co., located opposite of the Durango Exchange. W.C. Kindred, “one of the best mechanics in the Southwest,” was in charge of the department.
75 years ago: Miss Charlene Tresner was appointed to a chair position and Miss Anna Mae Goulding was appointed as secretary-treasurer on the Southern Ute Agency Committee.
50 years ago: A 22-year-old Durango man, who was working at the A&B Texaco station at 2501 Main Ave., received first-, second- and third-degree burns after the engine of a car backfired and ignited his clothing. He was taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance.
25 years ago: The top 16 chess players in the United States were welcomed during the opening ceremony of the 1992 U.S. National Chess Championship tournament, which was held in Durango that year.
