100 years ago: Louie Lashment, the “boarding house king,” visited Durango from Gladstone. He was on his way to Ignacio to spend time with family.
75 years ago: Raymond H. Handley, son of Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Handley and Durango High School graduate, was commissioned as second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon completion of “the Officer Candidate Course at The Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia.” He previously served as sergeant of the 357th Infantry at Camp Barkeley, Texas, before attending school for officers.
50 years ago: Eight inches of new snow were reported at Purgatory Ski Area, but at least 10 additional inches were needed before the slopes could open for skiing, said ski area manager Chet Anderson.
25 years ago: The Durango Hills Partnership, which included brothers Tom and Skip Davidson, filed a lawsuit against La Plata County commissioners to make the public roads – particularly Silver Mesa Drive – in the subdivision off of Florida Road private.
