Durango Arts Center seeks volunteers

The Durango Arts Center is looking for volunteers to be gallery attendants and front desk receptionists. Volunteers will provide a visual presence and welcome visitors to DAC and the Barbara Conrad Gallery, provide information about current exhibits, assist with art sales and perform administrative duties.

Sorrel Sky Gallery hosts artist workshop

Sorrel Sky Gallery will host a Sculpture for Bronze workshop Feb. 21 and 22 in Durango. Artist Patsy Davis will offer students an opportunity to learn the process of working in bronze.

Davis grew up in Wisconsin and Iowa before attending Rhode Island School of Design. She worked as an industrial designer, creating models for giftware and toy companies including Hasbro, Warner Brothers and Disney for more than 25 years. In 1996, she moved to Southwest Colorado, where in 2002 she began working in bronze.

Exhibit on electrical power opens at FLC

Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host an opening reception for its new exhibit, “Tough Men in Hard Places” from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the center’s museum. This event is free and open to the public.

Based on the book of the same name, the exhibit displays the era of innovation in bringing electrical power to Southwest Colorado beginning in the 1890s.

The book, Tough Men in Hard Places: A Photographic Collection, was researched and written by Esther Greenfield, a longtime volunteer at Center of Southwest Studies.

The book is available at the center and Maria’s Bookshop in Durango. Copies will be available for sale at the event.

Fundraiser for music association Friday

BAAM! (Bayfield Association for the Advancement of Music) will host a Valentine’s concert starring the bluegrass band, Badly Bent. This concert is a fundraiser for the Bayfield School District’s music department and instrument drive. The concert will be Friday at the New Performing Arts Center at Bayfield High School. Cost is $12 per person or $20 per couple. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the band plays at 7:30 p.m. Prizes include a free dinner for two. Tickets can be purchased at Bottom Shelf Brewery, Tuning Fork, the BHS office or by calling 884-9900.

Printmakers invited to enter show

The Creede Arts Council will sponsor its 15th Annual National Small Print Show. This is a juried show of original, hand-pulled prints that cannot be larger than 10-inches-by-10-inches, matted. All printing techniques are accepted. Prints will be exhibited and available for purchase May 24-July 1 in the Creede Repertory Theatre.
