100 years ago: “Planning to leave the murky moll of the city and settle down peacefully on a little farm, John Olbert, proprietor of the La Plata Bottling Works, has purchased the J.W. Sites ranch on the Florida Mesa from the Elks’ Lodge here, and will build a large brick residence there this summer. The ranch consists of 200 acres.”
75 years ago: “Youth delinquency was an interesting subject, interestingly discussed at the meeting of the Whittier Parent Teacher Association. Rev. H.E. Root, a dynamic speaker whose words unfailingly invite the complete attention of his audience, spoke on this compelling subject.”
50 years ago: “Floyd Kelly, retiring this year from the business division of Fort Lewis College, will be faculty Marshal for commencement exercises. One hundred four degree candidates have been recommended for graduation.”
25 years ago: “Colorado voters would be able to decide whether 10 historic cities in the state, including Silverton, could offer limited gambling under a resolution gaining initial approval in the state Senate. The measure to allow blackjack, poker and slot machines in the towns cleared on a voice vote but must be approved by a two-thirds majority on final reading in order to move on to the House.”
