Look: Parking story with a happy ending

We have probably all been grouchy about Durango parking meters – I never have change, my meter card is in another car, this meter won’t let me buy all the time I will need for my appointment.

I have begun setting a timer on my phone to alert me to return to my car with minutes to spare before the dreaded envelope appears on my windshield. So I was confounded when I recently found that ticket under my wiper when my phone alarm said I should have 15-plus minutes before the meter expired. Grrr.

Before heading home, I grudgingly wrote the check for the fine – and a perturbed, but polite, note all over the envelope explaining my issue. I deposited the ticket and check in the convenient box at the post office, still miffed.

The next day, however, my tune changed when I received a call from a pleasant gentleman from the parking department. He was calling to tell me that after receiving my note they had checked the culprit meter and found it to be malfunctioning. He asked for permission to shred my check and apologized for my inconvenience. I happily complied and now feel compelled to report this happy episode.

The meters may be the bane of my trips to town, but real human beings are doing their jobs to monitor the parking spaces and insure that they regularly open up for new users and have working meters.

Thank you, parking department, for your prompt, courteous response.
