Community college finalist for award

Pueblo Community College’s solution for meeting skilled manufacturing workforce needs in its service areas has earned its selection of finalists for a national innovation award.

The college’s development of a fleet of mobile learning labs has made it one of 10 colleges that are up for the Community College Futures Assembly’s Bellwether Award.

The Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida sponsors the Bellwether Award program to recognize cutting-edge, trend-setting programs that other colleges might find worth replicating. The awards are given annually in three categories to colleges with outstanding and innovative programs or practices.

The college’s Economic and Workforce Development Division launched its first mobile learning lab in late 2007 to provide work-site customized training. The college designed and equipped the mobile learning labs to train workers in welding, mechanical systems, electrical systems and manufacturing.

The college will make its presentation to the Community College Futures Assembly on Jan. 26 at the organization’s National Policy Summit in Orlando, Florida.

All of the finalists will be honored at a reception that evening, and the award winners will be announced during a luncheon the next day.
