Pick it up and plug it in.
That’s all that you’ll have to do if you’re one of two lucky winners who win a recycled freezer chock-full of local foods.
Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the “Celebration of Local Abundance,” to be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.
Organizer Linda Ilsley, owner of Linda’s Local Food Café, is hosting the event as a way to say “thank you” to anyone who eats, grows or promotes locally grown food.
Proceeds will help to offset the cost of a commercial freezer that is available for use by local farmers in the event of a crop emergency.
When hail destroyed Adobe House Farm’s tomato crop this summer, it was Ilsley who mobilized 75 volunteers to pick, sort and process – within 48 hours – hundreds of pounds of tomatoes.
Tickets to win a full-size freezer will be available for $20 each at the door to tonight’s event. Fort Lewis College students can enter to win a dorm-size freezer for $8. Appetizers, music by Carute Roma and a cash bar will all be part of the fun.
